5 Tips to Help Control Food Cravings

Reviewed By Danielle Glesne, RDN, LD, CDCES

Cravings are a normal part of life, but learning how to manage them can make it much easier to maintain healthy eating habits and reach your long-term goals.

While giving in to an occasional craving is perfectly okay, frequent impulsive eating can make it harder to maintain a balanced diet and a healthy weight.

Developing strategies to control cravings can help you make more intentional choices while supporting your overall health and well-being.

Here are five tips to help you control cravings…

1. Eat Enough Protein and Fiber

Protein and fiber are two of the most filling nutrients and can help keep hunger under control between meals.

Building balanced meals around these nutrients makes it less likely that intense cravings will strike later in the day.

2. Stay Properly Hydrated

Thirst is sometimes mistaken for hunger, leading people to eat when their body actually needs fluids.

Drinking water consistently throughout the day can help reduce unnecessary snacking and support normal appetite regulation.

3. Don’t Skip Meals

Going too long without eating can leave you overly hungry, making cravings feel stronger and healthy choices more difficult.

Eating regular, balanced meals helps keep energy levels stable and reduces the temptation to overeat.

4. Remove Temptation From Your Environment

It’s much easier to resist cravings when highly tempting foods aren’t constantly within reach.

Stock your home, office, and car with nutritious options so the healthier choice becomes the easier choice.

5. Get Enough Sleep and Manage Stress

Poor sleep and chronic stress can increase hunger hormones and make cravings for high-calorie foods more intense.

Prioritizing recovery, stress management, and quality sleep helps support healthier eating decisions throughout the day.

Cravings don’t have to control your choices—they’re simply one part of the eating experience that can be managed with healthy habits.

By consistently practicing these strategies, you can build a healthier relationship with food and make decisions that support your long-term goals.
